It does, however, include any income you received for your services as an employee of the United States or a U.S. agency. If you receive income from Puerto Rican sources that isn’t subject to U.S. tax, you must reduce your standard deduction. As a result, the amount of income you must have before you are required to file a U.S. income tax return is lower than the applicable amount in Table 1-1 or Table 1-2. This includes refunds resulting from taxes that were overwithheld, applied from a prior-year return, not figured correctly, or figured again because of an amended return. All taxpayers have important rights when working with the IRS. These rights are described under Your Rights as a Taxpayer in the back of this publication. This publication covers some subjects on which a court may have made a decision more favorable to taxpayers than the interpretation by the IRS. These bills generally have a 4-week, 8-week, 13-week, 26-week, or 52-week maturity period. They are generally issued at a discount in the amount of $100 and multiples of $100. The difference between the discounted price you pay for the bills and the face value you receive at maturity is interest income. Generally, you report this interest income when the bill is paid at maturity. If you paid a premium for a bill (more than the face value), you generally report the premium as a section 171 deduction when the bill is paid at maturity. You may be able to exclude from income all or part of the interest you receive on the redemption of qualified U.S. savings bonds during the year if you pay qualified higher educational expenses during the same year.

For more information, including how to figure your required minimum distribution each year and how to figure your required distribution if you are a beneficiary of a decedent’s IRA, see When Must You Withdraw Assets? You can’t keep funds in a traditional IRA indefinitely.
